Foreign sea curse

September 24, 2006

This is the second time Harry fails to do a dive abroad. Probably He can only dive in Greece. A suitable nickname for Harry is probably Jonah.

From Wikipedia: God ordered Jonah to preach at the city of Nineveh. Jonah did not want to, and tried to avoid God’s command by sailing to Tarshish. A huge storm arises. The sailors, realizing this is no ordinary storm, cast lots, and learn that Jonah is to blame. Jonah admits this, and states that if he is thrown overboard, the storm will cease. The sailors throw him overboard, and the seas calm. Jonah is miraculously saved by being swallowed by a large fish. In chapter two, while in the great fish, Jonah prayed to God and asked forgiveness and thanked God for being so faithful, and the result was, God commanded the fish to vomit Jonah out.

So the story begins…

After sending a lot of e-mails to many different dive centers in the little town of L’ Estartit in the coast of Costa Brava, it was finally arranged a day with 2 dive in the Medes Islands (“Islas Medes“). The day for the dive was scheduled to be the 24th of September 2006 which also happens to be Harry’s Birthday.

Bus to L' EstartitThe town of L’ Estartit is about 150km away from Barcelona. If someone wants to go to L’ Estartit or he can rent a car to go there or take the train, the bus or a taxi. The morning of 24th of September there was a light rain, but this fact wasn’t enough to make Harry back down on the idea. After a 3 hour journey by metro, train (renfer) and a taxi, Harry managed to get to L’Estartit in time. It this time of the day it was raining heavily. Still not a fact to stop Harry from diving. Walking all along the bay of L’Estartit to find the diving centre (UniSub) where the dives where booked, Harry became all wet.

Isles Medes on a bad day

Red FlagsIt wasn’t just the rain… It was actually quite windy, and also the sea was very rough! All the diving centres (counted more than 10) had cancelled their dives for today. Lucky Harry.

The weather was so tough that also swimming was prohibited (see the red flag in the picture on the left).

So Harry with no dive to make, took a little hike in nearby mountains and a small walk in the town. L’ Estartit is actually a divers town. Except the many diving centers which are there, everything else (like restaurants, bars, souvenir shops) have a little something to do with divers. And this is usual cause Medes Islands are a marine reserve, and the abundance of life is making it one of the best diving sites in the Mediterranean. Arghhhh, being so close and someone can not dive, Arghhhh!!! Imaging seeing everywhere around you information about diving without being able to dive and to have to carry your equipment the whole way back.

At least Harry got all the information if he wants to plan it again some other time in the future. Contacts, information, timetables, everything is in our hands.
This is the second time Harry is not able to dive in foreign country, the previous time was in Cyprus. Hopefully it is not going to become a habit.

A trip to Barcelona, for business, but without diving seeing some fish? No! Harry decided to go to the Aquarium of Barcelona in order to see at least a little bit of marine life. It was very nice, and If someone has 300 euros to throw he could arrange a dive with the Sand Tiger Sharks. Here is a short video of the aquarium.
